Each year Hawthorn Football Club will dedicate one match to remember the exploits of those who fought on The Kokoda Track in 1942, and to better educate Australians about the extraordinary feats of the soldiers under the most appalling conditions. Our very own soldiers died, were wounded, and many returned scarred for life. Their families lost husbands, sons and loved ones. We live today as free citizens in a free country. We are forever in their debt.
At Hawthorn our players have adopted the four pillars of Kokoda: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice, as their mantra and now we intend to consistently give back in a tangible way to the children of The Kokoda Track.
Hawthorn Football Club is proud to acknowledge the ‘Battle of Kokoda’ in the Round 13 clash against the West Coast Eagles at Etihad Stadium. The Hawks will wear the Guernsey to raise awareness for the Kokoda Track Foundation. This unique Hawks home Guernsey manufactured by adidas specifically for this occasion, has the HFC Kokoda motif on both the front & rear of the Guernsey which signifies the 4 pillars that our playing group have adopted. The Guernsey also features the opponent, date and venue on the front.
Fans have the opportunity to bid for match-worn guernseys, like this #17 guernsey worn by Brian Lake, which will be provided to the winner signed and unwashed, presented in a premium boxed display case and issued with a Certificate of Authenticity from the AFL and the AFLPA .
The Guernsey will be available for delivery/collection* from The Ricoh Centre, Waverley Park from late August, 2013.
